Seeking Penguin Gold: Open Source Business Models

Wednesday, September 13, 2006
Fenwick & West, LLP, Mountain View

About the Event

Open source software is everywhere; deployment of the Linux operating system in all types of devices is increasing faster than any other operating system, particularly internationally; the use of MySQL is growing rapidly and the Apache web server runs most of the world’s web servers. Venture capitalists have already invested hundreds of millions of dollars in companies with open source software as a key component of their business models. Many more startups are looking for ways to monetize open source and attract venture capital investors.

How do you make money from something that’s free? In this CSPA event, we bring together a panel of distinguished practitioners in the world of open source. The panel will discuss various open source business models and the venture capital investments in such companies. What models are being used to monetize open source? What are current areas of investment interest? Are any areas over invested? What impact will GPL 3.0 have on SAAS companies? Are open source application companies going to be successful? What effect will major software vendors’ actions have on the opportunities for startups? What opportunities are there in China? In India? Join us for some food, networking, and an informative and insightful evening.
