Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman, Palo Alto
About the Event
As one journal article has billed him, Bill Nguyen is Mr. Do-It-All. Bill is
an entrepreneur's entrepreneur, and one of the few in the Valley, who truly
deserves the term serial entrepreneur. He has founded or played a critical role
in an amazing 7 startups. Bill has taken on the world of messaging with
OneBox.com, which he founded and sold to what is now Openwave for $850 million,
the world of telecommunications with Seven Networks, whose goal is to make
mobile email available on every mobile phone at an affordable price, and now
he's taking on the world of music with his current startup,
Lala.com. Bill's startups
typically aim at nothing less than revolutionary changes at each industry he
takes on.
In this engaging one-on-one setting, we will chat with Bill about his passion
for startups (i.e., What makes him tick?), the driving factors for his many
successes (i.e., How does he do it?), and his advice to the budding entrepreneur
in the audience (i.e., How can the rest of us do it?). Join us for an insightful
evening with Bill, and network with others from the CSPA as well as the VSVN
communities.

Bill Nguyen, Co-Founder, Lala.com
Bill Nguyen cofounded lala.com in 2006 with
the intention of reenergizing the music industry. Since then, the site has
amassed an astounding 1.8 million titles registered by Lala users.
Prior to founding Lala, Bill founded SEVEN Networks in 2001 with the goal of
growing the nascent mobile data market. Under Nguyen's leadership, SEVEN
achieved successful commercial deployments of its mobile email software with 115
of the world's largest mobile operators, and works on 240+ handsets. SEVEN
received many market awards of distinction. In 2002, leading analyst firm Frost
& Sullivan named SEVEN Mobile Communications Entrepreneurial Company of the
Year, Technologic Partners gave the company the "Investors' Choice" award for
the second consecutive year, and MIT named Nguyen to the Technology Review 100,
an annual award granted to the world's top technology and business innovators.
Prior to starting SEVEN, Nguyen founded Onebox, which set out to redefine the
unified messaging market. Onebox was acquired by Phone.com, now Openwave
Systems. Nguyen has also played a critical role in the success of numerous other
startups. As vice president of products at Tioga Systems (now
Support.com), he contributed to the product
definition of what became the leading support infrastructure software for
corporate enterprises and service providers. Nguyen also served as Vice
President of Products for push technology pioneer FreeLoader, and headed
business development and product management at the ForeFront Group, where he was
responsible for launching the company's utilities, including WebWhacker, the
first offline browser.
Bill has been named to Fortune's 40 Under 40 list, MIT's Technology Review 100
and is a member of the World Economic Forum's Global Leaders of Tomorrow.
