Seeking initial funding from angel investors has always been a popular avenue during startup stage of many Silicon Valley high-tech companies including Google and Twitter. Engaging an angel investor in the process, however, can still be challenging and carries its own risks and rewards. In this session, we have assembled a stellar panel to discuss:

  • Why/when/how to choose your angel investors?
  • How do you approach and get your first funding?
  • What do you need to prepare?
  • What are the advantages and disadvantages of angel money?
  • What are the "dos and don’ts"?

Session 1: Touched by Angels – Raising your Seed Funding

Milton Chang | Managing Director | Incubic (Member of Band of Angels)
Milton Chang is Managing Director of Incubic Venture Fund (www.incubic.com). He was CEO and President of Newport Corporation and New Focus, Inc., and took both companies public. He currently sits on the boards of Precision Photonics and OpVista. Milton earned his BS in EE from the university of Illinois, and PhD from Caltech. He is a Fellow of the IEEE, Laser Institute of America (LIA), and Optical Society of America (OSA). He was past president of Laser Electro-Optics Society of the IEEE and LIA. He has received a number of prestigious awards, including Distinguished Alumni Award from Caltech and the University of Illinois. In addition, he is a Caltech Trustee, a member of the Committee of 100, an Overseer of The Huntington, and he has been a member of the Band of Angels since year 2000. He writes monthly business/management column for Laser Focus World and Photonics Spectra, and spends time freely coaching entrepreneurs.

Don Jones | CEO | VentureDeal
Don is the CEO of VentureDeal, a national venture capital database that provides the latest information about venture-backed technology companies, venture capital firms and transactions in the United States. Previously, Don was a director of business development at Cogent Communications, a publicly-held Cisco-backed telecom carrier.

His particular area of expertise is in business development and sales, with over 15 years of successful results in a variety of technology organizations. Don is also a proud member of the Band of Angels.

David Lee | Partner | Baseline Ventures
David Lee is a Partner at Baseline, a seed investing firm that has partnered with Ron Conway. While Mr. Conway remains passionate about early stage investing, Baseline takes the lead on diligence and mentoring, advising, business development, later stage fund-raising, M&A, and strategic advice. Mr. Conway provides access to all his resources through Baseline, which shares his same philosophies. He is closely aligned, and has a significant amount of capital in Baseline, which means that an investment from Baseline will receive access, assistance and services provided by Ron and the Baseline team.

Prior to Baseline, David was most recently Head of Business Development for StumbleUpon (acquired by eBay). Prior to StumbleUpon, David worked at Google, where he lead new business development efforts related to its video initiatives, among other projects. Also, he has worked as a corporate attorney for various technology-focused law firms. David earned a BA in Physics/Math from Johns Hopkins, a JD from NYU and an MSEE from Stanford. While at Stanford, he was a recipient of a National Science Foundation Graduate fellowship.

Geoff Roach | Angel Investor | Keiretsu Forum
Geoff Roach joined Keiretsu Forum in 2004, and is currently an active angel investor under Keiretsu Forum. Keiretsu Forum is founded by Randy Williams in 2000 to provide a disciplined and structured approach to private equity investing. Since its inception, Keiretsu Forum members have invested over $180M in 200 companies in technology, bio-tech, life sciences and other sectors with high growth opportunity. With over 750 members, Keiretsu Forum is the largest angel investment community in world.

Geoff Roach, a native of New Orleans, is a veteran 30 years as an entrepreneur in the technology industry in the United States and Europe. Geoff held sales and marketing positions at Cullinet, the first software company to go public, to reach a billion dollar market valuation, and to be listed on the NYSE. At DEC, Geoff led a software business unit covering nearly 20 countries with revenue over $400 million. Moving to Silicon Valley in 1994, he had management positions at Informix, Pure Software, Callidus Software, and other companies. Geoff was part of a management team at Mergent Systems that led the acquisition of Mergent by Commerce One resulting in a return of over 30 times in less than 18 months. Besides his time with Keiretsu, Geoff serves as Executive Director of San Jose Jazz, producers of the annual Comcast San Jose Jazz Festival. Geoff has a BS from University of Louisiana, an MS from Clemson University, an MBA from the University of Missouri, and is a graduate of the Stanford Business School Executive Program. He is currently completing his PhD study on ‘Angel Returns’ from the University of Phoenix. He is still trying to create the perfect gumbo.

Session 2: Series A – Stepping into Big Leagues

Dan Ahn | Managing Director | Voyager Capital
Dan Ahn, Managing Director, joined Voyager Capital in 2008. Prior to Voyager, Dan was a partner and managing director at Woodside Fund for nine years. Dan focuses on web and data center infrastructure, mobile related and other core technology areas. He has extensive experience in venture capital investing, portfolio company management and technology entrepreneurship.

At Woodside, he has led the firm's investing in core technology and infrastructure companies, and led the creation, development and investment in numerous successful companies, including companies such as Analogix and Berkeley Design. Prior to Woodside Fund, he was an associate at the Foster Management Company, a venture capital firm that invested in and consolidated fragmented service companies. Prior to that, Dan was the co-founder and president of a successful technology startup company, Endpoint Technologies, Inc., which developed and sold real-time manufacturing control systems for semiconductor device production. He was responsible for the company's product management, business development, and finance. The company was acquired by Applied Materials. Prior to that, Dan was an analyst in the venture capital group at CS First Boston, where he worked with information technology companies.

Dan has an MBA from Harvard Business School and a BA, magna cum laude, from Harvard College. In addition to being a classical violinist, Dan enjoys outdoor activities and reading.

Mark Gorenberg | Managing Director | Hummer Winblad
Mark Gorenberg, Managing Director, joined Hummer Winblad Venture Partners in 1990. He has served as a board member for start-up and public software companies, including AdForce, HomeGrocer, NetDynamics and Scopus Technologies. Currently, he serves as a Director of Aria Systems, Cenzic, Infopia, Kwiry, Lathian Systems, ontheFRONTIER, Omniture (NASDAQ: OMTR), Replay Solutions and Tizor Systems.

Mark is also a member of the Board of Trustees for Massachusetts Institute of Technology Corporation and The H. John Heinz III Center for Science, Economics and The Environment.

Prior to joining Hummer Winblad Venture Partners, Mark managed a number of new media areas and was a member of the original SparcStation I team at Sun Microsystems. He received a BSEE from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, an MSEE from the University of Minnesota, and an MS in Engineering Management from Stanford University.

Vish Mishra | Senior Venture Partner | Clearstone Venture Partners
Vish joined Clearstone in March 2002 with over 30 years of leadership and management experience in the high tech industry including software, Internet, networking and telecommunications. He is a founder and served as a board member of Telera, a cutting edge voice web infrastructure company which was sold to Alcatel for $140 million in 2002. Vish was also co-founder of Excelan (1983), which was funded with $7.3 million in venture capital, went public in 1987, sold for $225 million in 1989 and went on to contribute $1 billion to Novell’s revenue in subsequent years.

Vish prides himself in being a mentor capitalist who sits or has sat on boards of many venture-backed companies such as Abeama, Cofix, Onjibe, PostMedia Group, Quantros, Ramp Networks (sold to Nokia), SloMedia, Verano, and Xalted IP Networks. His prior experience includes founding VP of Operations of Excelan and VP Novell and EVP of iPlanet (a unit of Sun Microsystems and AOL), and CEO of four start-ups: Info-Objects, Mindworks, IntelliMatch and Ace Software.

Vish holds a BS in Electrical Engineering from the Institute of Technology at Benares Hindu University, an MS in Electrical Engineering from North Dakota State University and MBA work from the University of Minnesota. He is a very active Director and Charter Member of TiE who has dedicated himself to the growth of the organization since its inception.

Vish's focus at Clearstone is deal flow, syndicate networking, portfolio company support and executive coaching. His vast network in Silicon Valley, extended globally through TiE, is an invaluable asset to entrepreneurs and to us. Vish serves on the board of Novariant (formerly IntegriNautics).

John Steuart | Managing Director | Claremont Creek Ventures
John has spent the last 20 years managing, building and investing in technology and life science companies. John focuses on the intersection of the information technology and life sciences markets including bioinformatics, molecular diagnostics, genomics, proteomics, software and instrumentation for med-tech industries.

John serves on the board of directors of Arcxis, Tibion, Fluxion, Gene Security Network & Wired Benefits. He is an Industry Fellow at the Center for Entrepreneurship and Technology at the College of Engineering as well as a member of the Advisory Council to the Lester Center's Berkeley Entrepreneurs’ Forum at UC Berkeley.

Early in his career, he joined Alafi Capital, an Emeryville-based venture firm specializing in early-stage biomedical companies, where he served as an officer of the General Partner. At Alafi, John lead investments in more than a dozen successful start-ups, and served as the senior executive and board member of various firms such as Tanox, Software Ventures, Lipomatrix, and Megan Health.

In the mid-90s, together with colleague Nat Goldhaber, John helped start Cybergold, an Internet marketing and payments company, serving as the early COO and CFO through its IPO, merger with Mypoints and sale to United Airlines. John continued with the Mypoints unit of United serving as the Senior Vice President of Strategic Partnerships.

Larry Low (Moderator) | Partner | Orrick
Larry Low, a partner in the San Francisco office, represents public and private emerging growth companies, and venture capital funds. His clients are involved in a broad range of industries including, energy, semiconductors, internet, software and consumer products. He has extensive experience in start-up structure formation, venture financings, public offerings, mergers and acquisitions, and advises companies and investors in cross border transactions involving Asia.

Larry was appointed in 1995 by President Clinton as one of four U.S. representatives to serve on the panel of arbitrators of the International Centre for the Settlement of Investment Disputes.

Larry has written articles that have appeared in publications of the California Continuing Education of the Bar and the Practicing Law Institute. He has made presentations to the Practicing Law Institute, Law Journal Seminars, Hastings College of the law, University of California at Berkeley, Haas Business School and Boalt Hall School of Law, and the California State Bar.
